Grange Fermoy AC 5 mile Road Race

All roads led to the Glocca Maura on friday evening for registration for our annual 5 mile road race round Kilworth Camp. The club were keeping their fingers crossed to have an improved number of runners on last years number of 113. There was no fear of that as final number of entries was 188. The race attracted runners from various counties and even from Colarado in the US, with a little bit of persuasion I managed to get a strong contingent from West Waterford, former Providence runner and European U23 Cross Country Team Gold winner David McCarthy came up from Dungarvan along with Philip Harty a regular winner of various races around the south and southeast. Word must have got out bout the lads running as a strong field turned up to run the race including East Corks James McCarthy who we all know is a regular winner around the south. The race started off at a blistering pace along the narrow roads of the camp with the boys taking up the front, by the end of the 1st lap Dave had pulled away from the two lads and by the end of the race there was 38secs of a lead, 2nd place was up for grabs between James and Philip with James coming out on top in the end. The womens race was also a close affair with Corinna Walsh from West Waterford taking the honours from Geraldine O'Shea St Finbars and Racquel Valadez Colarado taking 3rd spot. Mens results 1 24:41 David McCarthy West Waterford 2 25:19 James McCarthy East Cork 3 25:31 Philip Harty Donore Harriers Womens results 1 31:55 Corinna Walsh West Waterford 2 32:25 Geraldine O'Shea St Finbars 3 33:56 Racquel Valadez Colarado The club had 18 seniors running with 5 prizes won by them and a number of seniors helping out, a great turn out by the club and hopefully we will have a larger number for next year. 30:10 Kealan O'Connor 30:35 James Bermingham 31:11 Brendan O'Mahony 32:09 Brian O'Connor 34:28 John Fitzgerald 34:40 Terri Hennessy 35:02 Maurice Tobin (1st M60) 35:03 Darren Flynn 35:19 John Griffin 35:49 Michael Ennis 36:05 Joan Ennis (1st F45) 36:12 Kevin Doyle 36:38 Michael Broderick 41:15 Mary-Clare Healy (1st F40) 42:01 Helena Noonan (1st FJ) 43:55 Etha Murphy (2nd F40) 47:08 Mike Keating 47:56 Siobhan Enright Also taking part were members of the Fermoy running group and local Fermoy runners, great running by all, 30:02 Mike Byrne 30:57 John Beecher 31:41 John Murphy 33:11 Don Pyne 33:48 Trevor Geary 34:02 Patrick Hanley 35:00 Kevin Dolan 35:09 Conor Bartley 36:40 Laurence O'Callaghan 36:47 Pavol Sisoksky 37:03 Fergus O'Connor 37:23 Johnny Geary 38:03 Alan Clancy 38:11 Jessie Duggan 38:14 Martin Lillis 39:03 Peter O'Brien 41:48 Brendan Collins 42:22 Declan Ennis 42:23 Pat O'Shea 42:52 Monika Jarcynska 45:42 Paul Ennis 47:29 Ronan Condan A big thank you to John Walshe for all his help on the night with the registration and timing.

Brendan and Darren took part in the Waterford Viking Marathon yesterday, it was the first running of a marathon in Waterford, nearly 1000 people took part in the full marathon and another 1000 between the half and relay. It is a tough enough marathon with the roads elevating up and down all along the course. There was two tough hills during, 1st one was a steep 400m and the 2nd was 1.25 mile long just before the halfway point, weather was up and down with a small bit of rain and heat varying through the race. Great running by Brendan who ran 3.28 as part of his training program for the Dingle 50 mile Ultra Marathon in 8 weeks and Darren ran 3.59 after cramping up badly and suffering for the rest of the marathon. Well done lads.

Club Singlets

Lads and Lassies, I'm looking to order new singlets, I've shown the samples to a few members who like the new material and sizes, I'll have to try and meet up with the rest of the members and see who wants to try out the sizes and hopefully will be interested so that we can promote the club at all races that people participate in.

Club updates

We are going to be in the process of building shot putt and discus circles on the edge of the track in the next few weeks, hopefully we might be able to interest anyone to try any of the events when the circles are done. Also I've taken up the challenge of qualifying as a national road racing course measurer, this means that I will be measuring our own race in Kilworth Camp on July 13th, once I measure the course and get it checked by a qualified measurer, I can send off the documentation to Athletics Ireland to be assessed and hopefully gain the national standard.

Counties Track & Field

The county Track & Field for the Juveniles is on in CIT Track on May 6th,13th and relays and county B's are on the 20th. It's looks like we have a good number competing and I would like to wish all athletes the very best of luck on the days and enjoy the events. Also best of luck to the coaches on the 3 days, it will be a busy 3 days.

The Bride 10k

The inaugural Bride 10k road race in Rathcormac got off to a great start with 246 people taking part. Summer Training

As the clocks have gone forward and we are in to the summer time, training has moved to the Colaiste track, as well as the Juveniles training there, the seniors have joined us on tues and thurs, the tue session is 400's and the thurs is 1000's for the seniors. The Juvenile training on the other hand is a variety of different events, not only do the kids do the short sprints and longer distances, we also cater for the long jump, high jump, hurdles, shot putt, discus, javelin and ball throw. We will be working on relays aswell for the boys and girls. I would like to take this opportunity to thank our coaches and helpers, Clo, Mary, Tim and Brendan Hurley and would also like to welcome back Dermot Leamy who is back after a long illness, good to see you back Dermot. As people can see we have alot of events to cater for with the Juveniles, lets hope we all enjoy the T&F season.

New Singlets for Seniors

We are in the process of sourcing a new supplier for singlets for the seniors, at the moment we have 2 sets of blanks from Azzurri, S,M and L for both men and women, I hope that people will try them for size so we can collect numbers, it would be nice to be kitted out for our own race in July.

Run a Mile

Lads and Lassies, I'm just putting this idea out for people to think about, how about the seniors and fermoy runners meet up in the track some friday evening and run a mile so as to get 1 rep max, we will time each individual and record everyone's time and arrange to repeat the same drill a couple of months down the road, it will give people an idea on how their fitness and speed is progressing, also it will give people a chance to meet up with the different people in the groups. It's time for idea's to be put forward and acted on to help the senior side of the club. Remember it's a bit of fun aswell. I was thinking the 2nd week in may. THE ONLY THING IS NO WATCHES ALOUD WILL RUNNING THE MILE!!!!!, it a chance for people to see how their pacing is without checking the GPS!!!

Leevale Open Sports Day, 14/15th April

Leevale Open Sports is scheduled this year on sat 14th april for Jnr and Snr athletes in CIT. Entries beforehand. For the juveniles its on Sunday 15th april. Entries on the day for Juv.

The Great Island 10 mile (Cobh)

The Great Island 10 mile road race in Cobh is the next big road race in Cork. Starting at 10:30am on Sunday, the 15th of April 2012, this race is sure to attract a large turnout. Last year, they got around 400 runners and it's likely that they will get a similar if not larger number this year. Remember all proceeds from this race go the Irish Cancer Society. Details are on the Running in Cork Blog.

Kilinaboy 10

This Sunday see's the final installment in the John Buckley 10 mile series for 2012, for anyone heading up there, it's not a flat course so you just have to enjoy it on the day, Olan and myself headed up there 2yrs ago and it turned out to be a sorcher of a day making the race that little bit tougher, but going by the recent change in weather I can't see that being any problem this yr!!!!!!!!

Ballycotton '10'

All roads are leading to Ballycotton on Mar 4th for it's annual 10 mile road race, this is one of the most popular road races on the racing calender, with entries closed on the Dec 2nd, when you think that entry forms were posted out on Nov 28th and available for download on Nov 29th. At this point 2500 entries were recieved. After that date only club members entries were accepted and anyone who ran the 4 races in the Ballycotton Summer Series. Our seniors and friends in the fermoy runners group are putting in alot of hard and good training in for Bally, hoping we see fantastic times and happy faces at the end of the race by all competing.

Woodies DIY All Ireland U11's Cross Country

Congratulations to Liam Fox who competed in the boys U11 1500m, finishing 26th in a field of 109 runners, fantastic running from Liam considering the majority of cross country is finished before Xmas.

New Website

Grange Fermoy AC is in the process of setting up a website for the club, this will include the history of the club, photos, past and present glories, training routes and schedules, links to various clubs and events and maybe news and views from members!!!!! Grange Fermoy also has a facebook page and also a fermoy runners group was set up on facebook to let people know when training runs are on and hopefully help to encourage people to meet up with existing runners in the town.

Dungarvan '10'

That time of the year again when the John Buckley 10mile series is upon us, Dungarvan is up first and going by the training that is happening during the week, we should be expecting some fantastic times, not putting pressure on anyone!!!!!!!. So hopefully a good day by all and gr8 reports to be passed on.

Training Update

Training has been updated on the side of the blog.

Saturday long runs

Hi lads and lassies, if your up early enough over the last few weeks you might have seen a highly visible group of dedicated (or to the non running public, lunatics) runners hitting the high road and heading out of the town. As part of the group I must say that it totally enjoyable to be running with such a large group (9-11 so far), considering this time last year if you got 5 out at the one time for a long run you were doing well. Hopefully the group will remain consistant or even grow, anyone is welcome to join in!!!

Long John Silver does it again!!!!

After receiving Gold at Munster Master Indoors in Shot, weight for distance & High jump and Bronze at 60m sprint, John Rice took Silver in High Jump and Long jump, Bronze in shot putt and came 4th in 60m at the All Ireland Indoors last Sunday. Congratulations John! Great stuff!

Munster Senior Cross Country

John Griffin was the only Grange athlete to take part in the 10k X country Munster Senior race last sunday in Beaufort. Finished 50th in 48.20. Well done John!

"Welcome Back"
