Grange Fermoy AC 5 mile Road Race

All roads led to the Glocca Maura on friday evening for registration for our annual 5 mile road race round Kilworth Camp. The club were keeping their fingers crossed to have an improved number of runners on last years number of 113. There was no fear of that as final number of entries was 188. The race attracted runners from various counties and even from Colarado in the US, with a little bit of persuasion I managed to get a strong contingent from West Waterford, former Providence runner and European U23 Cross Country Team Gold winner David McCarthy came up from Dungarvan along with Philip Harty a regular winner of various races around the south and southeast. Word must have got out bout the lads running as a strong field turned up to run the race including East Corks James McCarthy who we all know is a regular winner around the south. The race started off at a blistering pace along the narrow roads of the camp with the boys taking up the front, by the end of the 1st lap Dave had pulled away from the two lads and by the end of the race there was 38secs of a lead, 2nd place was up for grabs between James and Philip with James coming out on top in the end. The womens race was also a close affair with Corinna Walsh from West Waterford taking the honours from Geraldine O'Shea St Finbars and Racquel Valadez Colarado taking 3rd spot. Mens results 1 24:41 David McCarthy West Waterford 2 25:19 James McCarthy East Cork 3 25:31 Philip Harty Donore Harriers Womens results 1 31:55 Corinna Walsh West Waterford 2 32:25 Geraldine O'Shea St Finbars 3 33:56 Racquel Valadez Colarado The club had 18 seniors running with 5 prizes won by them and a number of seniors helping out, a great turn out by the club and hopefully we will have a larger number for next year. 30:10 Kealan O'Connor 30:35 James Bermingham 31:11 Brendan O'Mahony 32:09 Brian O'Connor 34:28 John Fitzgerald 34:40 Terri Hennessy 35:02 Maurice Tobin (1st M60) 35:03 Darren Flynn 35:19 John Griffin 35:49 Michael Ennis 36:05 Joan Ennis (1st F45) 36:12 Kevin Doyle 36:38 Michael Broderick 41:15 Mary-Clare Healy (1st F40) 42:01 Helena Noonan (1st FJ) 43:55 Etha Murphy (2nd F40) 47:08 Mike Keating 47:56 Siobhan Enright Also taking part were members of the Fermoy running group and local Fermoy runners, great running by all, 30:02 Mike Byrne 30:57 John Beecher 31:41 John Murphy 33:11 Don Pyne 33:48 Trevor Geary 34:02 Patrick Hanley 35:00 Kevin Dolan 35:09 Conor Bartley 36:40 Laurence O'Callaghan 36:47 Pavol Sisoksky 37:03 Fergus O'Connor 37:23 Johnny Geary 38:03 Alan Clancy 38:11 Jessie Duggan 38:14 Martin Lillis 39:03 Peter O'Brien 41:48 Brendan Collins 42:22 Declan Ennis 42:23 Pat O'Shea 42:52 Monika Jarcynska 45:42 Paul Ennis 47:29 Ronan Condan A big thank you to John Walshe for all his help on the night with the registration and timing.

Waterford Viking Marathon

Brendan and Darren took part in the Waterford Viking Marathon yesterday, it was the first running of a marathon in Waterford, nearly 1000 people took part in the full marathon and another 1000 between the half and relay. It is a tough enough marathon with the roads elevating up and down all along the course. There was two tough hills during, 1st one was a steep 400m and the 2nd was 1.25 mile long just before the halfway point, weather was up and down with a small bit of rain and heat varying through the race. Great running by Brendan who ran 3.28 as part of his training program for the Dingle 50 mile Ultra Marathon in 8 weeks and Darren ran 3.59 after cramping up badly and suffering for the rest of the marathon. Well done lads.
