Races over Christmas

There is a few races over the Christmas period which might be done to burn off the Christmas dinner. The first of these races in on in Belgooly on the 26th of December at 12pm. It is a 4 mile race and a nice way to enjoy St.Stephens day.

If you think St.Stephens day is too soon to be running after the Christmas dinner there is also another race on in Bandon on the 28th of December. This race starts at 11am and is 5 miles. Two great races to look forward over Christmas thats if you can pull yourself away from the presents that Santa brought.

Newmarket to Kanturk '5'

Today was the Newmarket to Kanturk '5'. The first two miles of the race was a bit of a challenge with the snow falling but once that stopped it turned out to be very nice.

131 athletes braved the elements to finish the race. Sergiu Ciobanu of the Clonliffe Harriers was the winner of the race in a time of 24.07.

Grange/Fermoy AC had 3 representiatives. The first of these to cross the finish line was Morris Tobin in a time of 31.05, good enough for 33rd place and also good enough to win his age category. Next home was Olan Barrett in a time of 31.35 for 41st place.
Mary Sheehan came home in a time of 32.58 for 55th place and this was also good enough to win her age category.

Waterford Half Marathon

The Waterford half marathon was held today in perfect conditions for a long distance run. There was a big turnout of 932 runners.

The winner of the race was Sergiu Ciobanu of the Clonliffe Harriers in a time of 67.11. Grange/Fermoy AC had 5 athletes taking part. First home for Grange/Fermoy was Morris Tobin in a time of 88.37 which was good enough for 104th place, followed closely by Olan Barrett in a time of 89.39, for 120th place. Next in was Peter Walsh in a time of 92.43 for 160th place again followed closely by Darren Flynn in a time of 93.51 for 177th place. Our only lady representative was Joan Ennis and she finished in a very good time of 100.05 for 283rd place.

East Cork 3km Winter Series

Last night was the third race in the East Cork 3km winter series. It turned out to be a lovely night for a race. Again there was another big crowd that took part with 182 taking to the start line.

The winner on the night was James McCarthy who won in a very good time of 8.54. Grange/Fermoy AC had 4 representatives on the night. The first to cross the finish line for Grange/Fermoy AC was Brian O'Connor in a time of 10.48 which was good enough for 14th place. Next to cross the line was Olan Barrett in a time of 11.30 which gave him 28th place followed very closely by Brendan O'Mahony who was only 1 second slower and one place behind Olan. John Griffin was our fourth member and he ran a time of 11.48 for 36th place.

Munster Masters XC

The club has a new Munster Masters XC champion with Maurice Tobin winning his age category that is an extremely good achievement for Maurice and well done to him. The Munster Masters XC was held yesterday in County Tipperary. Also competing yesterday in the mens section was Brian O'Connor who came in 12th place in a high quality field.

Representing the ladies was Clo Fitzgibbon and Joan Ennis. Again the standard was very high in the ladies section. Clo managed 9th in her age category and Joan came home in 7th in her age category.

European Cross Country

The club have organised a bus to go to the European Cross Country championships which are being held on the 13th of December in Dublin. Kids will be free and adults will be charged €10. The bus will leave at 7am at the latest as the first race begins at 10am. Anyone interested is asked to contact Clo Fitzgibbon on 0863162145

Results + Photos from the XC in Bandon

The Intermediate and Masters XC took place in Bandon last Sunday on a very nice day. Due to the heavy rain leading up to the race it left the course very soft, but Grange/Fermoy AC performed very well.

In the mens team event Grange/Fermoy came in 5th place with Brian O'Connor, Maurice Tobin, John Griffin and Olan Barrett being the scoring runners coming home in 14th, 19th, 26th and 31st place respectively. Maurice Tobin also managed to win his age category.

In the ladies event Grange/Fermoy performed extremley well. In the Team event they came in a very good 3rd place with Clotilde Fitzgibbon, Joan Ennis and Siobhan Steele being the three members of the team. They ended up in 5th,9th and 12th place respectively. Joan Ennis came second in her age category with Siobhan Steele coming in 3rd place in her age category.

East Cork Winter Series

The second race of the winter series was held tonight which was a very nice evening for a run. 4 Grange/Fermoy AC athlethes tested themselves over the 3km course. There was a big turnout of 185 competitors.

James McCarthy of East Cork AC won the race in a time of 9.05.
Leading home the Grange/Fermoy team was Darren Flynn in a time of 11.30 which was good enough for 28th place. Directly behind Darren was Olan Barrett in a time of 11.30 for 29th place. Brendan O'Mahony ran a time of 11.47 for 45th place and John Griffin was next in a time of 11.55 for 49th place.

Lisgoold 5km




The Lisgoold race was held on Sunday last and it must be said one of the toughest 5km routes that you will come across. First Mile was all uphill, but still an enjoyable race.

The winner of the race was Ravis Zakis from the West Waterford club in a time of 16.10

There was a turnout of 125 competitors and out of that there was 4 from Grange/Fermoy AC.

Leading home the charge was Brian O'Connor who came in 16th place with a time of 19.42. Next we had Maurice Tobin in 19th place with a time of 20.11, this was good enough to win the O50 age category. Olan Barrett came home in 25th place with a time of 20.51. Siobhan Steele came home in a time of 24.39 which was good enough 64th place and the first female over 35 well done to all.

Maurice was both shocked and privileged by the amount of people who turned up to wish him a happy birthday. He would especially like to thank everyone who sent him cards and presents.

Dublin City Marathon

The Dublin City marathon took place today and it was very nice day for a marathon. We had 5 Grange/Fermoy AC athlethes running the marathon.
First to cross the finish line was Clotilde Fitzgibbon in a time of 3hours and 28mins.Karen Kenny came home very strong in a time of 3hours 34 mins. Next we had Darren Flynn and Joan Ennis in with times of both 3 hours and 36mins. Mike Ennis came in next with a time of 3 hours and 40 mins.
Brendan O'Mahony was next in with a time of 3 hours and 42mins.
Well done to all who run those very good times indeed.

Dublin City Marathon

The Dublin city marathon takes place tomorrow. I know there are some members of Grange/Fermoy AC running tomorrow and we wish them the best of luck. I will try and get the results of the athletes from Grange/Fermoy AC on here tomorrow evening when I get them.

East Cork Winter Series

The East Cork Winter Series began tonight in Midleton. It is a 3km race. There was a good crowd of 132 taking part. A very quick pace was ensured on the night with James McCarthy winning in a time of 9 mins flat just beating his clubmate Sean McGrath by 6 seconds.

There were 4 Grange Fermoy athlethes on show. Brian O'Connor coming in 15th place and with a time of 10.53. Maurice Tobin next in 29th place in a time of 11.49, Olan Barrett was in 31st place in a time of 11.52 and next home was John Griffin in 46th place and a time of 12.30.

Munster Novice Cross Country

The Munster Novice Cross Country was held yesterday in Dungarvan. It was held over a very nice course on the gorunds of St.Agustine's college. There was a strong field in this race with athletes coming from all over Munster to compete. Representing Limerick AC was an athlete from Ethiopia. He ended up winning the race.

There were four athletes representing Grange Fermoy. First home was Brian O'Connor in 53rd place, then we had John Griffin in 70th place, Maurice Tobin in 72nd place and right behind him was Olan Barrett in 73rd place.

In the team event Thurles Crokes took the honours with Grange Fermoy AC in 9th place. Well done to all who competed.

Cross Country

The first cross country race this year was the Cork County Novice and U23 for both men and women. It was held in Killeagh on Sunday the 11th of October. We had 4 in the mens section and one in the ladies section.

In the mens section Brian O'Connor led the team home in 19th place. Maurice Tobin was next in 37th. Olan Barrett came home in 50th place and John Griffin was next in 55th place.


In the ladies race Clotilde Fitzgibbon put in a fantastic performance to come home in 5th place. Which was a very good run indeed.

Well done to all athletes who went to Killeagh and all performed very well

Cross Counrty Season

The first race of the XC season will begin on the 11th of October in Killeagh at 12pm. It is the Cork County Novice and Cork U23 Championship. We hope to be well represented in both the mens and ladies sections.

Blarney Half Marathon

The Blarney half marathon took place today in beautiful conditions. Nice and warm and probably too warm for a race of this distance but at least it wasn't raining. There was a big turnout of 551 athletes.

Grange-Fermoy AC had 5 competitors in today's race, Brian O'Connor, Brian Moriarty, Mary Sheehan, Joan Ennis and Clotilde Fitzgibbon
.

Brian O'Connor was first home in a time of 1.28.10 which was good enough for 71st place, next home was Brian Moriarty in a time of 1.33.43 which was good enough for 123rd place.

Clotilde Fitzgibbon came home in a time of 1.37.23 which saw coming in second place in her age category. Closely followed home was Mary Sheehan in a time of 1.37.51 which saw her win her age category. Next home was Joan Ennis in a time of 1.46.58.

Results of the Togher '5'

We had 4 athletes in action at the Togher 5km last week. They were Michael Lyons, Brian Moriarty, Terri Hennessy and Mary Fitzgerald.

Michael Lyons was quickest home with a time of 16.11 which was good enough for 7th place. Brian Moriarty was next with a time of 19.46. Terri came home in a time of 20.24 and Mary came home in a time of 21.07.

The race begins at 7.30pm from Togher and is a Cork BHAA race.

As usual the entry fee for registered runners is €5 and for non-registered is €7.

There is a big crowd expected so arrive early.

Ballycotton '5'

Last night was the last of the Ballycotton summer series. There was a very big entry of 504 runners. The lovely evening brought them all out. Grange/Fermoy had a good representation with 9 runners.

The winner of last nights race was Sean McGrath of East Cork AC in a time of 26.15.

The last of the Ballycotton summer series is tomorrow night Thursday the 27th of August in Ballycotton.

This is one of the most popular races in Cork so give yourself plenty of time to get there because there might be a queue for registration.

The start time of this race is 7.30pm. Entries are taken in the school of Ballycotton.

Results of the Army/Naval 5 Mile

There were 4 Grange/Fermoy athletes at this race. 2 representing Avondhu Motor Factors, 1 was representing Blarney Woolen Mills and the last was running as a temp. They were Shane Maher, John Griffin, Brian Moriarty and Olan Barrett.

There was a total of 334 runners. With Colin Merritt being winner on a time of 26.17.

Ballinameela 5 Mile

A race that might be of interest to some people is the Ballinameela 5 mile on Friday the 21st of August at 7.30pm

It claims that it is a fast and flat course so perfect place for a PB.

Entry fee is €8 and entries are taken at the Ballinameela community centre.

Army/Navy 5 Mile

A race that might be of interest to some people is the Army/Naval 5 mile road race tomorrow night the 19th of August.

The race begins on Haulbowline Island at 7.30pm and not the usual 8.00pm.

This is a BHAA race so the entry fee is €5 for registered runners and €7 for non-registered runners.

John Harnett Challenge

What a very enjoyable race. Something different to the norm. The first 5 miles were pretty much all uphill and the remaining 4.5 miles were virtuall all down hill. The track was a mixture of road and dirt track.

There was a turnout of 56 athletes. With Kieran Meade winning from Tralee in a time of 55.29.

There was 5 from Grange/Fermoy on show again. With Michael Lyons once again leading home the team and finishing second.

Maurice Tobin was first in the M55 category and Mary Sheehan was first in the F50 category. Grange/Fermoy also took second in the team category so all that took part for Grange/Fermoy won a prize.

Last night was the An Tobar Ardmore 5 mile race. A race that was run in misty conditions which is probably ideal for a road race because it wasn't too warm.

They got a very good turnout on the night of 238.

Grange/Fermoy had 4 athletes at the race.

Michael Lyons led home Grange/Fermoy with a new PB of 26.39. Which was good enough for 2nd an incredible performance.
Shane Maher was next home with a time of 29.26 also a new PB, so well done to Shane, that time was good enough for 20th.
John Griffin was next home in a time of 31.52.
The fourth home for Grange/Fermoy was Olan Barrett in a new PB time of 33.39.

The winner on the night was Sandis Bralitis with a time of 24.35 which was a new course record.

Ardmore 5 Mile

A race that might be of interest to some people is the An Tobar Ardmore 5. The race takes place this Friday the 14th of August.

This is race number 10 and final race in the Ger Wyley/Nike Summer Series.

Entries will be taken at Ardmore GAA centre. Entry Fee is €8.

Please note that the start time of the race is 7.30pm.

Grange Athletic Club in conjunction with Ballyhooly community are holding the first John Hartnett 10 mile road race taking place in Ballyhooly next Sunday 16th of August. Starting at 12.30pm from the Ballyhooly bridge.

There were Grange Fermoy members in action on Thursday 6th of August in the Shanagarry 5km. There was a turnout of 92. Leading home Grange Fermoy was Shane Maher in a very good time of 17.50. Which was good enough for 8th place. A very good performance. John Grifiin was also present and he had a very creditable time of 19.02. Our final competitor on the night was Olan Barrett who completed the course in 20.23. Well done to all three.
